Handmade Bloodred Diamonds

Scientists from Novosibirsk, Russia are authors of the new excitement in the jewelry world. They learned how to turn diamonds, transparent in nature, into blood red stones Diamonds are not painted on the outside, the hair-change occurs on the atomic level.

Diamond is the only precious stone, in which the absence of color means higher value. But absolutely colourless diamonds are vary rare. More often than not, they are brown, with a shade of yellow. As such, the stone isn't very appealing to the jewellers, but if it falls into the hands of the scientists, it will have a different fate.

It's like a fairy-tale of Cinderella, said geologist Daniel Ephremenko: from obscurity to the world of bright and beautiful. Jewelers call such diamonds "ennobled stones." Yellow and green diamonds in the world of gemology are not uncommon. The American specialists produced them without any problem at the end of the last century. But handmade blood red diamond is the first success of Siberia. According to the scientists, "this is super hit."

Unique technology author is Victor Vince. He gave his thoughts to the creation of the red diamond still working as a Fellow at the Institute of monocrystals and the miraculous stones were made when he became a PhD and the head of a jewelry company.



There's more than one step to the creation of the diamond.

In the first phase, researchers examine the stone to understand if the diamond would withstand high pressure overload.

The second step of diamond processing is in the chamber of high pressure where the temperature exceeds two thousands degrees Celsius.

The third - radiation exposure. Stone placed in a special reactor and is linked to the electronic accelerator. On the "run" command the current of 3 million volts is ran through a crystal.

All of this is happening behind half-a-ton metal doors. Under electrons barrage diamond is changing its color.

"We created defect which absorbs the red end of the spectrum. Now it is perceived as a dark red crystal," - explained PhD Victor Vince.

American designers companies are already show great interest in Novosibirsk scientists' invention. Curiously, the cost of man made stone will not be more expensive than a good colourless diamond. "What's done by nature," say jewellers, "is still valued more".
